(FABRICATION)

We drew up and supplied the fabrication drawings that were used to ensure laser precision. Working closely with the fabrication team, we wanted to fully understand the behaviour of the raw aluminium material when being moulded to a certain angle, allowing for adjustments to be made for machine tooling, without losing design integrity.

(FINISH)

With aluminium being such a soft material, we took the time to carefully sand through several grades from medium to fine. In doing so, we were able to strip away the factory finish to reveal a faint, textured reflection, before sealing with a beeswax. The use of an industrial material with a natural finish provides a tactile quality and subtle warmth.

This aluminium chair is one of three pieces crafted from off-cuts from the New Town Studio Apartment project. Aluminium shelves were fabricated for the space, and due to their length, a full sheet of material was required, leaving behind significant waste. The shelves were designed to be modest and functional; slotting seamlessly into place.

When repurposing the leftover material, we aimed to preserve this simplicity through a minimal intervention approach. The chair is composed of just three separate pieces that slot together, making each part easy to handle individually, while sturdy and grounded when assembled.
Sharp lines with an angled back, the proportions work well at a desk or dining table, a reading corner or listening room.

Hand sanding the aluminium, we worked through several grades to achieve a soft reflective feel before sealing with a beeswax. As aluminium is a soft material, the chair is designed to wear its scars. Everyday use will see scratches and marks upon its seat and legs which can be seen as subtle nods to the industrial processes used to create it.

FROM WASTE MATERIAL TO FORM

THE ‘PW—OB.01 CHAIR’ IS MADE FROM RECLAIMED ALUMINIUM, A PROJECT WASTE MATERIAL. COMBINING CLEAN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN WITH FUNCTION AND VERSATILITY, IT HIGHLIGHTS THE VALUE IN REPURPOSING MATERIALS, TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO CONTEMPORARY FORMS.
