This aluminium chair is one of three pieces crafted from off-cuts from the New Town Studio Apartment project. Aluminium shelves were fabricated for the space, and due to their length, a full sheet of material was required, leaving behind significant waste. The shelves were designed to be modest and functional; slotting seamlessly into place.

When repurposing the leftover material, we aimed to preserve this simplicity through a minimal intervention approach. The chair is composed of just three separate pieces that slot together, making each part easy to handle individually, while sturdy and grounded when assembled.

Sharp lines with an angled back, the proportions work well at a desk or dining table, a reading corner or listening room.

Hand sanding the aluminium, we worked through several grades to achieve a soft reflective feel before sealing with a beeswax. As aluminium is a soft material, the chair is designed to wear its scars. Everyday use will see scratches and marks upon its seat and legs which can be seen as subtle nods to the industrial processes used to create it.

“Instead of accepting building waste as a standard by-product of projects and construction—we challenged ourselves to think beyond the primary role of renovation, designing and manufacturing a collection of objects that would utilise all remaining corners of redundant aluminium sheet material; exploring various scales to respond to a series of sensory experiences.”
